We understand buying a luxury item is an investment. We take the risk out of your investment by ensuring each and every designer label we sell is guaranteed authentic.
Uptown Safari accepts only authentic items for consignment. We refuse to sell replica bags, period. All of our store's luxury designer items available for purchase in the store are inspected and are guaranteed to have passed a certified authentication process.
Each piece in our gallery undergoes a rigorous, multi-point inspection process that starts the minute the consigner brings the item into the gallery.
Our authentication process begins with a thorough inspection. We inspect materials, workmanship, details, any tags, labels, logos, hologram stickers, date and/or serial codes, and identify the time period of each item.
Extensive research is then conducted on each item’s style and brand, which includes side-by-side comparisons and critical examination of the following components detailed below. We assess the value based on the fluctuating current market and adjust our prices periodically to accurately reflect these consumer trends.
Luxury pieces are constructed with some of the world’s finest materials. Our experts work with and cross-check a wide variety of leathers, furs, and exotic skins, such as mink, sable, python, and dozens more.
Authentic designer pieces are known for fine workmanship. Logos, prints, stitching and quilting are closely examined and compared to ensure they match up with the designers’ standards for quality and craftsmanship. For example, when examining Hermes bags, we look for consistent and precise hand-stitching as one identifier of authenticity.
We examine for evidence that any hardware used is accurate in weight and color. Fonts and markings are all triple-checked under magnification for accuracy. We confirm proper measurements of the item, and how the lining should look for each style of bag. Each designer uses details that are unique to their brand.
Below is some helpful information we give to all our shoppers who have questions specifically about our Louis Vuitton inventory. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have. We are here to help.
How do you know your Louis Vuitton is Vintage? You can purely see how professionally it was made, it survived through the years, long journeys and different fashion trends. Only high quality leather goods keep their shape, color and chicness. In fact, they become even more beautiful and valuable through the years… Just like vintage wine, these items improve with age and increase in value in the eyes of collectors. In addition to vintage Louis Vuitton bags look and feel, there are some very unique and particular signs that will help you to tell the authentic bags from a counterfeit ones.
Top tips for spotting a fake Vintage Louis Vuitton
1. LV Monogram and Louis Vuitton Logo Louis Vuitton is very careful with the LV monogram, so the monogram will never be crossed with the stitches, folds or lockers. On all the vintage bags the LV monogram on the leather canvas is symmetrical from side to side. Despite all the talks about 'the monogram can or can't be upside down on the original bags', the LV monogram can be upside down but only on those bags where there is the reason for that. For example, if the bag is made from one big piece of leather, then one side of the canvas will be covered with LV upside down. Example: The Speedy. 2. Leather Vintage Louis Vuitton bags are made with darker leather than the contemporary ones 3. Handles Light leather Louis Vuitton handles become slightly darker on the inside areas. If your bag's light handles are still light inside it's a fake. 4. Lining Original Louis Vuitton linings are grayish mushroom colored and made of alcantara (alcantara looks like suede), they are never dark brown! Suede linings are never in the original Louis Vuitton vintage bags. 5. Zipper Louis Vuitton vintage bags should have Talon or Eclair zipper pulls, but not the Louis Vuitton LV pulls that we have today. 6. Date Codes A date code (also commonly referred to as "serial numbers") is almost always in the same bag in every model throughout the years. Not all handbags with date codes are authentic and not all handbags without the code are fake.
Louis Vuitton bags made in the early 1980's had three or four digits only and Louis Vuitton bags made in the late 1980's had three or four digits followed by two letters some vintage handbags have one letter followed by 5 digits
Date codes were only widely used after the 1990's. Date codes since the 1990's consist of two letters followed by four numbers. The first two letters tell you the country where it is made and the numbers tell you the month and year it was manufactured.
France: A1, A2, AA, AO, AC, AN, AR, AS, BA, BJ, CT, DU, ET, FL, FR, MB, MI, NO, ND, RA, RI, SD, SL, SN, SP, SR, TH, VI, VR USA: FC, FH, FF, LA, OS, SD Spain: CA, LO, LB, LM, LW Italy: CE, MA, SA Germany: LP *Be aware that this list is not complete and only Louis Vuitton has the complete list. The following is generated from various ebay guides
For example: "AR0921 MADE IN FRANCE" means the bag is made in France and it was made in February, 1991. You take the first and third digit as the month: 02 means February and you take the second and forth digit as the year: 91 means 1991.
Since January 2007, Louis Vuitton has yet adopted another serial number reading system. Instead of first and third digit being the month, it now means the week of the year the bag was made. For example, VI 2007 translates "Made in France 20th week of 2007 meaning around the third week of May. This was perhaps changed to combat the counterfeit market. 7. Tags and cards If you are lucky enough to be buying a vintage Louis Vuitton bag that has it’s original tags, this is what you should have: only two tags, one of which will say "Louis Vuitton" and will say what the bag is made of whether it's monogram canvas, vernis, epi or another material. The other tag will have the model number, the correct french name of the bag and the barcode. Notice that they are NEVER attached to the bag and they don't have the little plastic round LV white tag the fakes sometimes have. The original Louis Vuitton tags are always ivory white with dark brown lettering and black barcode. They are NEVER yellow, and they don't have a dark bronzed envelope with a Louis Vuitton sticker on it. 8. Dust bag Before 2004 the dust bags were soft 100% cotton flannel bags. The LV embossed on them are always very small, discrete and dark with no hint of red. Any dust bag that has anything more than just LV or Louis Vuitton on it is a fake. 9. Extras First of all note that very, very rarely will get all the additional attributes to your vintage bags such as boxes, dust bags, shopping bags, tags and receipts. Don't hunt for them, hunt for the actual beautiful bags only! And never be mislead by those unnecessary attributes. Always look at the big picture as if the tags and other extras were not included.
